Frequently Asked Questions

Please find below some of our frequently asked questions about our osteopath service – you can find even more FAQs in our full FAQs section.

What is Osteopathy?

Is a system of diagnosis and treatment of the damaged areas of the body which emphasises the role of the musculoskeletal system (muscles, joints, nerves and ligaments).

What can an Osteopath treat?

Almost everything. Osteopathic treatment considers not only the physical aspects of the body but also the mental and social factors that may be contributing to a particular health problem as well.

How many treatments will I need?

This will depend entirely on the type of injury, our assessment following your first treatment, and the rehabilitation period. This includes you putting into practice our advice for recovery, including resting.

Will the treatment hurt?

We can’t guarantee manual therapy won’t be painful, but it’s important for you to be honest with us and tell us if it’s hurting.

We use a pain scale where 0 is you can’t feel anything, and 10 is that you’re going to hit the roof, or us! The maximum we want to reach is 7, there will be the odd occasion when it might reach an 8. If you’re concerned, tell us and we will work within those limits.

Are there any side effects to Osteopathy?

The most common side-effect is some general aching/soreness for 24-48 hours, however, most people do not experience any side effects at all.

Who sets the standards of training and practice for osteopathy?

The standards of osteopathic training and practice are provided and promoted by the General Osteopathic Council, the profession’s statutory regulator established under the Osteopaths Act 1993.

All the Osteopaths at West Berkshire Injury Clinic are registered and regulated by the General Osteopathic Council (GOsC).

What our patients say about us

  • Andrew is the absolute embodiment of ‘therapy’. Not least for his extensive experience and knowledge which enables him to quickly diagnose and reassure, or for his ability to create tailored and realistic rehab and strengthening plans to help aches and pains dissolve, but for his compassionate and holistic approach  to treatment. He listens to all your woes, not just the ones that present physically, and sympathetically and firmly gets you back to a place where you can smile again and feel able to do the things you love. He’s my go-to ‘fixer’ and gets my vote every time.

    MILLIE

  • Andy is excellent and has made a huge improvement in my flexibility and strength. Andy is knowledgeable and provides a confident and friendly approach to getting to the root cause of the physical muscle and joint problems and then treating them effectively.

    CHRIS BEVAN

  • I have been to Andy many a time for both sports and general injuries and would highly recommend his treatment. He has a professional manner and always manages to work miracles so much so that I feel like a new person when walking out of an appointment with him.
